Computer equipment has the fastest obsolescence of any consumer product, even though most of the components are built to last for years. This results in very few of your working PC's and other equipment reaching the end of their working lives.
In 2004, UK businesses disposed of 2 million computers into landfill sites, and with a number of highly toxic 'ingredients' used in their manufacture computer disposal is rapidly becoming a major environmental issue. In response to the problems of disposing of computer equipment, the European Union has introduced a Europe wide directive, coming into force in the UK in 2007 that aims to raise recycling levels to 75%.
Functional equipment that has little residual value is collected, permanent storage is removed, and the data is securely and irrecoverably destroyed. A certified data destruction service is available on request.
Any non-functional IT or other equipment is stripped into component parts and the working components are collected for spare parts.
All unserviceable components are recycled in bulk locally through specialised trade recyclers, that are able to recover raw materials from printed circuit boards, plastic and mixed metals.
